For more information on Green-e Energy certification requirements, call 1-888-63-GREEN or log on to www.green-e.org Frequently Asked Questions Q. What is "green power?" A: Green power is electric energy produced by renewable, more environmentally friendly sources, leading to negative air, water and natural resource impacts. Typical technologies used to create green power are solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and low-impact hydropower. Q: What is Green Power EMC? A: Green Power EMC is a group of member-owned electric cooperatives in Georgia who have joined together, creating a non-profit corporation, to facilitate procurement and marketing of electricity from cleaner, greener Georgia sources. The most-environmentally friendly power ever created in Georgia will be added to the member-cooperatives power mix, and offered to members on a subscriber basis as a power option that will enable them to contribute to a cleaner environment. Q: What technology source will provide the largest source of green power for users? A: In the start-up stage of Green Power EMC, existing methane gas from landfills will provide the largest source of cleaner energy. Over 300 landfills in Georgia have been researched, with 10 being classified as excellent candidates-the first and lowest cost to develop. Q: What are the components of a landfill gas system? A: A landfill gas to electricity system has three basic components: a gas collection system, which gathers the gas being produced within the landfill, a gas processing and conversion system, which cleans the gas and converts it into electricity, and interconnection components. Q: What exactly are the environmental benefits of this "green power"? A: EMC green power projects would have the same environmental benefits as any one of the following: taking 144,000 cars off the road, planting 156,000 acres of forest, annually displacing the use of 312,000 tons of coal; or avoiding the use of 1,211,500 barrels of oil each year. Q: What will be the cost of this environmentally friendly energy? A: The cost for green power will be slightly higher than that created from usual sources due to the cost of the technologies involved. The extra cost is a small price to pay for the environmental benefits for generations to come. Only those members who subscribe will pay the additional cost. Ocmulgee EMC will be selling green power in blocks of 150-kilowatt hours. The cost will be $4.00 per 150-kilowatt hour block purchased. Q: I understand this is the first such program in the state of Georgia. Do other electric utilities outside of Georgia offer this program? A: More than 80 utilities offer similar programs throughout the U.S. including electric membership cooperatives in Indiana, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Mississippi, Tennessee and the West. Environmental groups who are working together to help the nation move toward cleaner air and water initiatives support in President Bush's National Energy Plan and Congressional draft legislation, as well as green power programs. The electric membership community is excited to be able to present this new initiative to its members, many of whom have requested such a program. Q: How will I know that this "green power" is actually being run into my home? A: The renewable energy that you will be purchasing is not directly routed to your home, but by subscribing you are helping to support the purchase of additional clean energy and encouraging more investment nationwide in environmentally friendly ways to generate power. For every environmentally friendly kilowatt-hour purchased by cooperative members, one less kilowatt-hour is being purchased from other less environmentally friendly sources such as coal-based energy. Energy Efficiency in the Kitchen The largest energy users in your kitchen are the refrigerator/freezer and range. Together they can account for approximately 12 percent of your total electric bill. They are a necessary item, so what can you do? You will have to become energy efficient! Refrigerator/Freezer Set the refrigerator temperature between 36 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the freezer no lower than 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Open the doors as seldom as possible, closing them quickly. Cool foods to room temperature before placing them in the refrigerator unless otherwise noted in the recipe. Defrost manual refrigerators when the frost is ¼ inch thick. If you do not need a second refrigerator, then unplug it and have the door removed. Keep condenser coils clean. Keep the freezer portion full. This will help you to retain cold air as you open and close the door. Make sure you get everything out the first time you open the door. This will help to eliminate unnecessary door openings. Range/Oven Only use pots and pans that fit the heating units. Use a flat bottom pan with a tight fitting lid. Don't preheat the oven unless the recipe calls for it. You do not always have to preheat when you are broiling. Use a timer and try to avoid opening the oven door before the food is done. Plan meals ahead so that several foods can be cooked at one time. Use a pressure cooker, it can save energy and shorten cooking time. Dishwasher and Disposer If you use only a few dishes a day, run the dishwasher only once a week. Washing a full load of dishes uses less water than washing them all by hand. Use cold water to pre-rinse dishes in the sink. If available, use energy saving cycles. Let the dishes air dry. Only use cold water in your garbage disposer. Microwave Use when reheating leftovers. Use to thaw out foods when time does not permit natural thawing. Use the microwave oven in place of the conventional oven whenever possible in the summer because the microwave does not heat up the kitchen. This includes radios, TVs and phones with cords. Advise wet bathers not to handle them. Use battery-powered electronics when possible. * For indoor hot tubs, install a ventilation fan to prevent the buildup of heat and moisture in the room. Check the tub's water level before using it. A spa without enough water could damage the heater and pumps. * Consult local building codes to ensure you locate your hot tub a safe distance away from electrical outlets. A licensed electrician should handle all electrical connections in the hot tub and check the condition of underwater lights. Faulty lighting systems can electrocute bathers. * The National Electrical Code requires hot tubs to be located within 15 feet of a manual cutoff switch. * And according to the National Spa and Pool Institute, a 15-minute soak at 104 degrees is the maximum safe limit for an adult, but children should not soak for more than 10 minutes in water no hotter than 95 degrees. Exposure beyond these limits can raise body temperatures beyond safe levels. Rewire, Hire-And Avoid A Fire It's said that electrical wiring problems create more than 40,000 house fires and $2 billion in personal damage every year. Don't be part of a statistic. Consider this: * Flickering lights indicate trouble. So do wall switches and outlets that feel warm to the touch. * Extension cords aren't for permanent use. If that's how you're using yours, you're asking for trouble. * Two-pronged outlets don't accept three-prong appliance plugs. An electrician should upgrade your two-pronged outlets; that third plug grounds the appliance for safety. * Every bathroom, kitchen, laundry room and outdoor outlet should be equipped with a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI). GFCI's cut power off directly at the outlet in case of emergency. * Some houses built in the 1960s have aluminum wiring, which can overheat and lead to fires. Get your house inspected to see if you need to upgrade to safer wiring. * Label each circuit in your electrical panel. If your circuit box doesn't have a main disconnect that can shut down the whole system in an emergency, call an electrician to have one installed. * Don't let an amateur do a professional's job. Electrical wiring in not for do-it-yourselfers. Always hire a licensed electrician.   SAFETY TURTLE helps protect kids, pets from danger of drowning According to the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, drowning is the number-two cause of death among children ages 1-4, as well as several other age brackets up to the age of 15. Last year, approximately 400 children died in backyard swimming pools, about 3,000 children are rushed to emergency rooms every yearâ??and more than half of those suffer permanent brain damage. Safety Turtle to the rescue! The alarm system, which consists of an AC-powered base station and one or more Turtle wristbands, alerts parents the instant a child falls into the water. The wristband is placed around the child's wrist and is locked with a childproof key. If the child falls in the water, a loud alarm sounds at the base station and continues until the alarm is reset. The sys tem, coupled with a travelbag accessory and battery pack, can be taken anywhere there's water, and can support any number of wristbands for families with multiple children. (There's a Safety Turtle for pets, too; the sensor is attached to the pet's collar.) Of course, Safety Turtle is an added measure of safety; children should be properly supervised when in an area of potential danger. Designed  and  maintained by  Lowry's PC Services Copyright © 2012. That means a business can select its power supplier based on reliability and cost. It also ensures Georgia companies are satisfied in a competitive environment. What Makes It Possible When the state legislature passed the Georgia Territorial Electric Service Act of 1976, it assigned exclusive service areas for connected loads under 900 kW. It also enabled most customers with connected loads over 900 kW to choose their power supplier. So, if you're locating a new facility or expanding in Georgia, you may be able to select your power supplier. In Georgia, it's often possible to choose between three power supply alternatives: one of Georgia's 42 locally managed and consumer owned Electric Membership Corporations, an investor owned utility or municipality. What Makes It Practical This competition is made cost-effective through an agreement among Georgia's major power suppliers that established joint ownership of the state's transmission lines and substation facilities. The agreement formed the Integrated Transmission System (ITS). This shared ownership of the ITS eliminates costly duplication and guarantees that each supplier has the ability to serve a customer choice facility. Why It's Important Having the right power supplier is crucial, especially if your operation is energy intensive. Even if it isn't, your power supplier can still have a major impact on production efficiency and profitability. And once you choose your supplier, it's permanent. So, when you're looking at alternatives, evaluate their quality of service, reliability, load management incentives, and current and future rate structures closely. And take advantage of your power choice. Designed  and  maintained by  Lowry's PC Services Copyright © 2012. All Rights Reserved. Whether you are a new volunteer or a veteran elected official, we have a number of programs that can be customized to meet your needs. With our participation in the economic development services offered through Georgia EMC, we can assist communities with the development of strategic economic development plans and provide training and orientation on the economic development process. Facilitation Services Through Facilitation Services, we help local economic development and business organizations create a strategic plan for the future. This includes helping communities find the direction they want to take over the next 25 years, and assisting chambers of commerce in taking a leadership role to make that future direction a reality. Other services offered include: creating a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats); facilitating town hall meetings to disseminate information and gather public input on your economic development activities; and holding retreats for development organizations and chambers of commerce, as well as for locally elected officials where principles of team and consensus building are emphasized. Team Building Effective teamwork is vital to economic development success. That's why Community Development services include a course that encompasses team building and leadership development. This program uses self-assessment and problem-solving techniques to help build cohesiveness among groups that function as teams, such as elected officials and chamber of commerce and development authority executives. Presentations & Training Creating a plan for the future is only a part of the economic development challenge. Once communities know where they're headed, they need to figure out the best way to sell themselves to the world at large. Community Development can help in this area through its comprehensive Presentations & Training services. For instance, the Sales Team Training Program will help make sure the team that markets your community to businesses and industry has the knowledge and experience that's required in today's competitive environment. Among other services, which cover areas such as business retention and expansion, retail/commercial development and tourism development, we also offer the comprehensive Community Economic Development Orientation Program (CEDOP). CEDOP is a one-day orientation initiative designed to give community volunteers and elected officials an overview of economic development in Georgia. CEDOP teaches participants about the critical role that local leadership plays in economic development success. That means the people who buy electricity, own the company. This makes them unique, and it makes your participation vital. The leadership you elect sets policies that put you first. Because they are owned by the people they serve - local, personal service with an emphasis on the customer remains one of the key focuses at Cooperatives. One very tangible indication of the benefits of being a cooperative member is the return of margins, or excess revenues, directly to the customer in the form of Capital Credits . Cooperatives continually work to keep the electric rates as low as possible because they are not concerned with stockholder profits. They do not have stockholders. Cooperatives have consumer/owners and they know that the members want the lowest rates possible while maintaining a high degree of service reliability. Cooperatives know that good service is extremely important. They know that their members expect the Co-op to be operated in a thoughtful and fiscally responsible fashion. And, they know that their members expect them to be a good neighbor. Cooperatives know this because they are local, they care, and they have the very valuable input of their owners. As a cooperative, Ocmulgee does not earn profits. Instead, any revenues and other income over and above the cost of doing business during a given year are considered "margins." A percentage of the margins are allocated to each member of the cooperative who bought power from the utility during the year they were earned. Each retail member earns the same percentage on their purchases, although the actual dollar amount so "credited" will vary from members to member because it is based upon total individual annual purchases. Each member's annual credit allocation is accumulated and totaled over the period of time that the member continues to receive service. Margins are treated as capital contributed by the membership to the cooperative to help reduce the cost of borrowing and hold down rates. Margins are used for a variety of operating and capital costs and are typically repaid in the future to the members of record for the year in which they were earned. Once a year, a notice is published in our monthly newsletter explaining how much capital credits will be allocated to the members. An allocation is not the same as stock or cash. Allocated credits are typically paid to the members in cash over time through a process called capital credits retirement. The Ocmulgee board of directors usually considers a retirement of capital credits annually. When a capital credits retirement is authorized by the Board, both the dollar amount and year(s) to which the allocations relate are specified. Current member equity refers to the dollar value of a member's allocation - but not yet retired - capital credits. Immediate payment of a deceased members capital credits is permitted to allow timely settlement of the estate. If you want to submit such a claim for payment come by our office and bring a copy of the death certificate along with a copy of the probated will, if one exist, showing the executor of the estate. All News (50) Best of the Year (4) Hyperlink (24) Visited link (17) Hovered link (6) Our History Ocmulgee EMC is proud to be part of the nationwide network of electric cooperatives organized under the Rural Electrification Administration. In 1930 most rural Americans had no electric power because it cost more than profit-minded, investor-owned electric companies would pay to construct power lines so far to serve so few. The improving standard of living enjoyed by city dwellers never reached beyond the city limits. And then a little known federal government program, the Rural Electrification Administration (REA), paved the way for rural Americans to build their own electric utility companies. Unlike investor-owned electric power companies interested only in profits, REA financed cooperatives were to be owned by the people they served and operated on a non-profit basis. The organization of Ocmulgee Electric Membership Corporation was a result of a meeting held in the Dodge County Courthouse, which authorized H. H. Burch, J. W. Studstill, W. H. Mullis, Jack Jones, Eugene Wilcox, Mrs. A. J. Lowery and Mrs. E. M. Harrington to proceed with the organization of a cooperative for the purpose of bring electricity to its members, and to make an application to the REA for funds with which to construct an electric distribution system. The organizers presented their petition to the Judge of Dodge Superior Court, Judge Eschol Graham, on March 29th, 1938, and after advertisement, a Charter was granted by the Superior Court of Dodge County, Georgia on May 9th, 1938. The first meeting of the incorporators and Directors after incorporation was held in the office of Will Ed Smith in Eastman at 2 p.m. on May 11th, 1938. At that time, by-laws were adopted and the following were elected to membership: H. H. Burch, J. W. Studstill, W. H. Mullis, Jack Jones, Eugene Wilcox, Mrs. A. J. Lowery, J. G. NeSmith, Mrs. E. M. Harrington and W. F. Daniels. They were the first Directors. The first officers were H. H. Burch, President; J. W. Studstill, Vice-President; Mrs. A. J. Lowery, Secretary and W. H. Mullis, Treasurer. J. B. McCrary Engineering Company of Atlanta was employed as the cooperative's engineer. Lines were staked in Dodge, Bleckley and Pulaski Counties; and maps were drawn by that company. Rights-of-way easements and applications for membership had been solicited since the time of the organization. The membership fee was $5.00, which was a lot of money in 1938. At first it was difficult to get people to sign easements. A great many people did not want electricity, some refused because they were afraid of electricity. Others felt that all this money being collected would be gobbled up in expenses of organization and solicitation of membership and right-of-way. The original application for a loan, along with maps showing the location of the lines to be constructed, was carried to the REA in Washington in an automobile at the expense of Dodge County. The County Commissioner, W. D. McCranie, was always interested in progressive programs on behalf of the people in the county. His son, W. C. (Bill), drove the car and was accompanied by J. W. Studstill, Will Ed Smith and H. H. Burch to Washington. At the second meeting of the incorporators and directors held on July 29th, 1938, it was announced that an allotment of a loan of $163,000.00 would be made by the REA to the cooperative for the purpose of constructing approximately 157 miles of line in Dodge, Bleckley and Pulaski Counties. The loan would be repaid in monthly installments over 25 years with an interest rate of 2.73%. Coffee Construction Company, of Eastman, Georgia, was awarded the construction contract at a cost of $81,500.00. The months seemed to drag by, but finally poles and wire was strung across the countryside. On December 24, 1938, Ocmulgee EMC energized 12 miles of power lines connecting 24 rural homes and farms, forever changing the lives of rural families in middle Georgia. Because of our organizers vision and the hard work of those who followed them, Ocmulgee EMC electric energy has made it possible for rural families in our area to enjoy a higher standard of living. Today Ocmulgee EMC has more than 6,800 members and has energized more than 1,650 miles of power lines. Designed  and  maintained by  Lowry's PC Services Copyright © 2012. All Rights Reserved. We do this by no only providing affordable electric service to our customers, but also by our active involvement in important community endeavors. Now with Operation Round Up, an innovative program that provides financial assistance to worthwhile activities and worthy individuals in our service area, we can share a simple and rewarding way for Ocmulgee EMC members to help support our community. Each month the electric bill of participating members are rounded up to the next highest dollar amount, and that extra change, anything from a penny to 99 cents, goes into the Operation Round Up fund administered by the Ocmulgee EMC Foundation Board. The average contribution is just 50 cents a month. That may not seem like a lot, but with a majority of Ocmulgee EMC members participating, Operation Round Up is able to do a world of good. The funds are used to help qualifying charitable/community organizations with specific needs that they have and to help people in need of assistance. All donations are tax-deductible and members will receive a summary of contributions at yearâ??s end. Decisions about the disbursement of funds are made by a 7-member board, the Ocmulgee EMC Foundation Board of Directors. The members of this group evaluate the applications for assistance and make final decisions on funding requests at the regular meetings. They serve as volunteers and receive no pay or other compensation for their time and efforts. Since the National Energy Act of 1992, OPC's directors have voted to restructure in order to allow Ocmulgee and other member EMSs to purchase some power from other suppliers. In preparation for deregulation, OPC has divided into three specialized companies, OPC, Georgia System Operations Corporation (GSOC), and Georgia Transmission Corporation (GTC). OPC operates primarily as a power generating company. GSOC and GTC are subsidiaries of OPC. Oglethorpe Power Corporation is located in Tucker, Georgia. Prior to 1975, 39 of the 42 electric cooperatives in Georgia, including Ocmulgee, were purchasing 80% of their wholesale power from Georgia Power Company, with the other 20% being supplied by federal hydroelectric generating facilities located in state. Georgia Power Company was unable to guarantee the future wholesale power requirements of the co-ops at a price they could afford to pay. Ocmulgee and 38 other EMCs, in response, formed Oglethorpe Power Corporation, a generation and transmission cooperative, in 1975. Today, OPC, shares ownership of modern generating plants and the statewide network of high voltage transmission lines with Georgia Power Company, the City of Dalton and the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia. This ensures that current and future Ocmulgee customers have reliable, economical sources of electric power. OPC's primary mission is to provide the power necessary to meet the needs of the 39 co-op member systems. To be successful, the corporation makes use of a diverse portfolio of power resources, including fossil, nuclear, coal and hydro facilities, as well as long-term and short-term contracts. Due to continued growth within the member systems' service territories, OPC also has an active power plant construction program. Today, OPC and the member systems, including Ocmulgee, have a power mix that provides diversity, flexibility and long-term capacity. OPC supplies energy to the member systems from 3,335 megawatts (MW) of owned or leased generating capacity and secures the remainder from a variety of other sources. Therefore, future costs have limited exposure to factors like fuel availability, prices, and changes in legislation. OPC is the nation's largest generation and transmission cooperative in terms of assets, kilowatt-hour sales, and ultimate customers served. Through OPC, Ocmulgee receives its electricity from eight generating facilities in Georgia: Plant Alvin W. Vogtle is a two-unit, 2,320 MW nuclear facility located in Burke County near Waynesboro, Georgia. OPC has a 30 percent ownership in the plant, which is operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company, a subsidiary of the Southern Company. Rocky Mountain is a three-unit, 848 MW pumped storage hydroelectric plant located in Floyd County near Rome, Georgia. OPC has a 75 percent ownership in the plant (Georgia Power owns 25 percent), and also serves as plant operator. Plant Hal B. Wansley is a two-unit, 1,779 MW, coal-fired generating facility located in Heard County near Carrollton, Georgia. OPC has 30 percent ownership in the plant, which is operated by Georgia Power Company. Plant Robert W. Scherer is a four-unit, 3,520 MW coal-fired generating facility located in Monroe County near Forsyth, Georgia. OPC owns or leases 60 percent of Units 1 and 2 of the plant, which is operated by Georgia Power Company. Plant Edwin I. Hatch is a two-unit, 1,720 MW nuclear facility located in Appling County near Baxley, Georgia. OPC has a 30 percent ownership in the plant, which is operated by Southern Nuclear Operating Company, a subsidiary of the Southern Company. Harrison Dam is a two unit, 2.1 MW hydroelectric facility located in Clarke County near Athens, Georgia. OPC owns 100 percent of the plant and serves as plant operator. Smarr Energy Facility is a two-unit, 217 MW gas-fired combustion turbine facility located in Monroe County near Forsyth, Georgia. They run primarily during high demand periods, especially on hot summer days. Smarr EMC owns the facility, which is operated by OPC. Sewell Creek Energy Facility is a four-unit, 492 MW gas-fired combustion turbine facility located in Polk County near Cedartown, Georgia. Smarr EMC owns the facility, which is operated by OPC. Because of continued strong growth in the demand for electricity, Oglethorpe Power is in the process of constructing both a simple cycle and a combined cycle combustion turbine project. These facilities are being built on behalf of a group of participating Member Systems, and are scheduled to become operational in 2002 and 2003. Talbot Energy Facility - OPC is constructing an approximately $280 million, natural gas-powered energy generating facility in southwest Talbot County, Georgia to help supply electricity to participating Electric Membership Corporations (EMCs) across the state. The first four units of this six-unit facility became commercially operational in May and early June 2002. The final two units are due for commercial operation by the summer of 2003. The Talbot facility will use clean-burning natural gas and the latest in generating technology to ensure clean, efficient operation and minimal impacts. Electricity from the facility will go into the statewide transmission grid to help meet the fast growing need for electricity by EMC customers throughout the state. Chattahoochee Energy Facility - OPC is constructing a $290 million combined cycle energy facility on the grounds of the Hal B. Wansley coal-fired plant in Heard County. The facility is scheduled for commercial operation in the spring of 2003. The OPC facility is one of four new combined cycle facilities scheduled for construction at the site. Georgia Power Company will build and own two of the facilities, and the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia will own the fourth. The OPC combined cycle facility will use clean-burning natural gas and the latest in generating technology to ensure clean, efficient operation and minimal impacts. Electricity from the facility will go into the statewide transmission grid to help meet the fast growing need for electricity by EMC customers throughout the state. Since 2003, our nonprofit corporation has offered customersof participating Georgia electric cooperatives the opportunity to support cleaner, renewable energy to supply a portion of their electric needs Green Power EMC utilizes "green" resources such as biomass, solar, wind, and water to generate electricity. We were the first in Georgia to invite our consumers to choose how some of their electricity is produced. Since inception, Green Power EMC has generated over 137,786,825 kilowatt-hours of green energy, providing the same environmental benefits as taking 136,618 cars off Georgia roads, or planting 194.680 acres in trees. For more information visit www.greenpoweremc.com The Green-e Energy logo helps consumers easily identify environmentally superior renewable energy options. For more information on Green-e Energy certification requirements, call 1-888-63-GREEN or log on to www.green-e.org Consumers will have the opportunity to purchase 150-kilowatt blocks of green power at $4.00 per 150-kilowatt block from Ocmulgee EMC. If you are an Ocmulgee EMC customer and are interested in purchasing Green Powercall 478-374-7001 or 1-800-342-5509. Frequently Asked Questions Q. Look at your last 12 months kilowatt hour history. The graph provided on your current bill can be helpful or you can call Ocmulgee for help. Check to be sure exactly what charges are included on the bill. Are there other charges beyond electric service? Have arrears been added to the total? Are there miscellaneous charges added to the bill? Any security light charges? How about returned check charges, financing charges, etc.? Check the number of days of usage. Is the number of days greater than other months in question because of meter readings cycles? Check your daily kwh average. Divide the kwh usage by the number of days in the billing period. Compare it to your average daily usage over the past several months. The meter measures energy usage. Remember that a short in the wiring will cause the meter to turn. There is no such thing as a "creeping" meter. If it moves, something is using electricity. Direct all of your attention away from the meter as the culprit. It is seldom the cause but often blamed. Less then 2 out of 1,000 meters are going to be wrong when tested. This includes running slow or running fast. Most old meters will likely run slow. After you have followed these simple steps and still are not satisfied, please contact us for assistance. Designed  and  maintained by  Lowry's PC Services Copyright © 2012. All Rights Reserved. If your particular question isn't answered here, please let us know and we will be glad to provide you with an answer. Contact our Customer Service Department at (478) 374-7001 or toll-free (800) 342-5509. You may also e-mail them at consvc@ocmulgeeemc.com . What do I do if my bill is higher-than-normal? If you receive a bill that is higher than normal, the first thing to look for is how many days of service were in the billing period. Calculate your daily kwh usage for the current month by dividing the kwh usage by the number of days in the billing period, compare it to your average daily usage over the past several months. If it's significantly different, stop to think if you have added a major appliance or altered your lifestyle in some way that would account for the change. Also compare the meter reading on your bill to the reading on the meter. How can I be certain my bill is correct when it fluctuates? While most residential electric accounts follow a typical pattern of seasonal usage, occasionally a customer will experience a higher than normal or lower than normal bill. In the average home, over forty percent of the energy bill goes to heating or cooling. This makes the amount of your bill very sensitive to changes in weather. Sudden fluctuations can indicate a problem with equipment in your home. Why is there a $10.00 base charge, even if I don't use any electricity? While most of the costs associated with purchasing electricity and delivering it to your home are built into the rates for each kwh you consume, the fixed costs associated with providing electrical service, which reoccur every month, are recouped in the form of a base charge. These fixed costs include the electrical system such as poles, wire, transformers, and meters, as well as reading your meter and processing, printing, and mailing a monthly bill. How am I charged for a security light? The monthly fee for your security light includes all energy consumed by the light and any maintenance required. Since the light is connected directly to Ocmulgee EMC primary power lines, the energy used by the light does not affect your home's energy bill and is not registered on your home's meter. I did not receive my bill this month, what should I do? You should receive your bill approximately thirty days apart. If you do not receive your bill near the normal billing date, please contact our Customer Service Department, as we cannot be responsible for delays or misdirected mail by the postal service. As stated on the bill this is the only statement you will receive, you will not receive a late notice. Accounts not paid by 5 days after Due Date are subject to disconnect for non-payment without further notice. Designed  and  maintained by  Lowry's PC Services Copyright © 2012. All Rights Reserved. By knowing the approximate amount of your electric bill each month, budgeting becomes easier. To qualify for the program a customer must have an Ocmulgee Electric billing history in good standing under his or her name at the current residence for at least 12 months. Levelized Billing program participants will have their meters read monthly and receive monthly bills; however, the amount billed will be based on a 12-month average, including the current month. Billing by this formula does not reduce your total cost for electricity, but rather evens out the wide fluctuations caused by higher energy use in the summer and winter. Participation in the Levelized Billing Program may be discontinued at any time by the customer and may be discontinued by Ocmulgee Electric if a bad payment record develops or if the account has a returned check. Upon cancellation of the Levelized Billing Program, the account will be adjusted for any deferred balance or credit. You may apply for the Levelized Billing Program by completing, printing and mailing the Levelized Billing Agreement , by calling Ocmulgee Electric , or by dropping by our office. This may be difficult when the power is out. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food safely cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed. Obtain dry or block ice to keep your refrigerator as cold as possible if the power is going to be out for a prolonged period of time. Fifty pounds of dry ice should hold an 18-cubic foot full freezer for 2 days. Plan ahead and know where dry ice and block ice can be purchased. Be prepared for an emergency by having items on hand that don't require refrigeration and can be eaten cold or heated on the outdoor grill. Shelf-stable food, boxed or canned milk, water, and canned goods should be part of a planned emergency food supply. Make sure you have ready-to-use baby formula for infants and pet food. Remember to use these items and replace them from time to time. Be sure to keep a hand-held can opener for an emergency. Consider what you can do ahead of time to store your food safely in an emergency. If you live in a location that could be affected by a flood, plan your food storage on shelves that will be safely out of the way of contaminated water. Coolers are a great help for keeping food cold if the power will be out for more than 4 hours-have a couple on hand along with frozen gel packs. When your freezer is not full, keep items close together-this helps the food stay cold longer. Consider what you can do ahead of time to store your food safely in an emergency. Digital, dial or instant-read food thermometers and appliance thermometers will help you know if the food is at safe temperatures. Keep appliance thermometers in the refrigerator and freezer at all times. When the power is out, an appliance thermometer will always indicate the temperature in the refrigerator and freezer no matter how long the power has been out. The refrigerator temperature should be 40 degrees F or below; the freezer, 0 degrees F or lower. If you're not sure a particular food is cold enough, take its temperature with a food thermometer. The FFA/EMC Career Development Event is an excellent opportunity for high-school FFA members to learn valuable skills in the design and application of electrical wiring. Through local, district, and statewide contests, these students compete for the opportunity to advance, with great incentives such as hand tools and college scholarships available for the winners. But with the valuable skills gained that often lead to career opportunities, every student who participates is a winner. Who can participate? Any active FFA member who is in grade 10, 11, or 12 in the State of Georgia is eligible to participate in this activity. Each chapter is limited to one contestant per contest. The top two individuals in the area contest may participate in the state contest during the same year, however, students who have participated in the state contest once are INELIGIBLE to participate again. How can I participate? Interested students should contact the FFA Coordinator or Agricultural Teachers at their High School, or contact us.
